Cognitive Load: The Hidden Cost of Too Many Open Tabs

What Is Cognitive Load?

Cognitive Load Theory, developed by John Sweller in the late 1980s, distinguishes three types: intrinsic load (the inherent complexity of the material), extraneous load (how the material is presented — unnecessary complexity imposed by poor design), and germane load (the mental effort devoted to forming schemas and genuine learning). The critical constraint: working memory — the mental workspace where active thinking occurs — has a strict capacity limit of approximately 4 items (Cowan, 2001), though with chunking, experienced thinkers can effectively hold more within a domain. When total load exceeds capacity, performance degrades and learning stops.

Why Multitasking Doesn't Work

What we call multitasking is actually rapid task-switching — the brain cannot genuinely attend to two demanding tasks simultaneously. Each switch incurs a cognitive cost: a 'task-residue' effect where attention from the previous task lingers and degrades performance on the new one. A 2009 study by Ophir, Nass, and Wagner found that heavy media multitaskers were actually worse at filtering irrelevant information, managing working memory, and switching tasks than light multitaskers — the opposite of what their self-selection might predict. Chronic multitasking appears to reduce the brain's ability to focus. (Ophir et al., PNAS, 2009)

Reducing Cognitive Load in Practice

Externalise everything non-essential. The brain is for thinking, not for storing. A capture system (inbox, note, canvas) offloads pending items and frees working memory for the task at hand. Chunk information. Group related items together so they occupy one working memory slot rather than several. Expert performance largely consists of holding rich, well-organised schemas that function as single chunks. Single-task deliberately. Close tabs and notifications. The aim is not just to reduce distraction — it's to eliminate the task-residue cost of context-switching.
